Using Relationship Psychology Basics

Psychologists study many things including relationships. Why do they do that? Because relationships are so varied and have many different facets that impact on each other. Psychologists strive to understand what these facets are, and what to do to help a relationship survive.

Some relationships are great, others stink. There appears to be no rhyme nor reason what causes the bad times, which is why they are so difficult to predict. This is why you are often surprised when a seemingly happy couple suddenly file for divorce.

So, can knowing about relationship psychology save you? Maybe, maybe not, but it will give you some insights. However, knowing some of the relationship psychology basics may help keep your relationship strong.

A study commissioned by the National Institute of Mental Health found that most young couples of 18 to 21 years of age, who avoided being intimate (in the strongest sense) with each other, showed strong evidence of abandonment and rejection fears. Those who had higher self-esteem worried much less.

In general terms, older couples do not tend to behave in this way. Probably because they have more experience in life, are more independent and worry less about what others think of them. They also worry less about breaking up than the younger couples and actually are more likely to stay in their relationships as well.

Also, women tend to lead in a conversation while men react (possibly no surprise there!). You can probably see how this could lead to friction, which goes to show that what you think you are saying, can be intrepreted differently to how you really mean it. Take this into account whenever you have a conversation.

These just provide an inkling of relationship psychology basics. Knowing the differences between the thinking processes of men and women isn't enough though, you still need hard work and commitment.

Keep the above in mind and find out all you can about relationship psychology. See a marriage guidance counsellor who has been trained to help. They will see the situation from the outside and help you help yourselves. Their strongest skills are in being able to listen, guide and teach you how to apply that psychology to improve your relationship.

Relationship psychology is just one of the topics you can use to either improve or repair your relationship. Visit www.relationshiprescues.com to find out more.
